Your *Manageable* 2020 Marketing Checklist

A small list that will have a big impact on your company this year

Can you believe January is almost over? If you’re anything like us, you’re still writing “2019” on everything—and will be until July. If you feel like you’ve missed the “new year, new me” bandwagon for a fresh start for your business, don’t throw in the towel on the entire year just yet. We’ve got some easy tips to get your company’s year started off on the right foot. Here’s Branding Bear’s marketing checklist to make sure this year is your best yet:

Item #1—Create a marketing calendar

Ugh, I know. We’re asking you to sit down and plan out your year—bore! While not exactly fun, taking a little bit of time to consider how certain trends and upcoming events will affect your business is extremely important. It can help with everything from ensuring you have the right amount of staff on a certain day (those made-up holidays sneak up on you!) or can properly campaign for an upcoming announcement, service, or product launch you’re hoping takes off. Taking the time to layout the year now will relieve a lot of stress later on and prevent you from reacting or missing out on opportunities. The best part? Yes, it might be time-consuming this year, but these calendars often only need to be tweaked in upcoming years.

If this task seems daunting, bring in one of our facilitators to lead your group in a massive organization effort to streamline your year.

Item #2—Analyze your past marketing efforts

Marketing can be elusive. It’s ever-evolving based on trends and the whims of society…but some things work while some don’t. Knowing what you’ve invested in successfully in the past and what didn’t pan out is a game-changer. If you’ve paid hundreds each year to have your company’s name listed in a phonebook but hardly receive any phone traffic, you might reconsider where you’re spending money. Going into the new year knowing what’s holding your marketing back and what’s a good investment sets you up for success.

Have no idea what’s working and what isn’t? Set up a consultation with one of our marketing experts and we’ll make sure you’ve got a better understanding of current trends and best practices.

Item #3—Create a brand image…and stick with it!

If you’re like a lot of entrepreneurs, you’re a “jack of all trades.” Business owners, especially those running small and mid-sized companies, have to be able to do a little bit of everything. While that’s expected from you, make sure your brand is consistent. Just because you’re washing windows one day and presenting an impressive initiative the next doesn’t mean your brand has to reflect the often-messy reality of running a company.

Create a brand image (or have our experts do it!) that emulates your company identity and then make sure it’s everywhere—from physical print products and webpages to social media posts, press releases and advertisements.

Item #4—Take a step back and put yourself in the shoes of your audience

First, who is your target market? Knowing who you’re trying to reach is always an essential step in developing a marketing strategy. You’ve probably thought about it before, but companies and societies evolve…is your audience the same as it was ten years ago?

Once you’ve figured out who you want to walk through the proverbial door of your company, you need to study that demographic and view your marketing through an empathetic lens. What’s important to them? What stage of life are they in? Which social platforms are they most likely to use? Learning a little more about them will end up helping you learn more about your business and its marketing needs.

Item #5—Determine which marketing materials your business needs

Your company’s culture is unique and your marketing should be, too. Just because most of society has thrown “offline” marketing materials out the window doesn’t necessarily mean you should. You know your customers—trust your gut! Once you’ve identified what has or hasn’t worked in the past, your brand identity, and who you’re trying to reach, you’ll be able to see more clearly what might work for you.

A consistent, engaging presence on social platforms, fresh website updates, and well-crafted marketing campaigns will ensure you’re connecting with your clients.
